PELVIC SCAN & TRANSVAGINAL SCAN / TVS

HIGH RESOLUTION SCAN TO EVALUATE UTERUS & OVARIES

ALL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Pelvic and transvaginal scans are essential diagnostic tools for assessing women’s health. If you’re considering or have been recommended one of these scans, you may have questions about what to expect. Below are the frequent doubts about these scans to help you understand both procedures and their benefits.

1.What is a pelvic scan?

This scan is a non-invasive ultrasound procedure that uses sound waves to create images of the organs within the pelvis, such as the uterus, ovaries, and bladder.

3. How is a this scan performed?

It is done by moving an ultrasound probe over the lower abdomen. A gel is applied to help sound waves produce clear images. It is done transabdominally

2. What is a transvaginal scan (TVS)?

A transvaginal scan is a type of ultrasound where a slender probe is inserted into the vagina to obtain high-quality images of pelvic organs.

4. How is a transvaginal scan(TVS) performed?

During the scan, a lubricated probe is gently inserted into the vagina. The probe transmits sound waves, creating highly detailed images of the pelvic organs.

5. Why is a pelvic scan performed?

This scan help diagnose conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, or pelvic inflammatory disease. They are also used to diagnose early pregnancy or investigate causes of pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding.

6. Do I need to prepare for this scan?

Yes, you’ll need to drink water to fill your bladder, which helps create clearer images. Avoid emptying your bladder until the scan is complete. For the transvaginal scan, the bladder has to be empty.

7. Is a transvaginal scan(TVS) painful?

The procedure is generally not painful, though some patients may feel mild discomfort during the insertion of the probe.

8. What are the key differences between the scans?

A pelvic scan is performed over the abdomen and requires a full bladder, but it offers less detailed imaging. In contrast, a transvaginal scan provides clearer, more detailed images by inserting a probe into the vagina, and it requires an empty bladder

9. Are the pelvic and transvaginal scans safe and reliable?

Yes, both pelvic and transvaginal scans are safe and reliable diagnostic procedures. They use sound waves, not radiation, making them harmless even during pregnancy.

10. How long does the procedure take? When will I get the results?

Both scans typically take 15-30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the assessment.

We will give you the printed report and images soon after completion of the scan

11. Can I resume normal activities after these scans?

Yes, you can immediately return to your daily activities after a pelvic or transvaginal scan. Neither procedure requires any waiting time after it is over

12. Do I have to choose one scan over the other?

Your doctor will recommend the appropriate scan for you. Transvaginal Scan offers a more detailed evaluation. Both scans complement each other and  we normally check transabdominally before performing a transvaginal scan

13. What is the utility of these scans?

Pelvic and transvaginal scans are recommended for early pregnancy evaluations, detailed imaging of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, or diagnosing conditions like endometriosis or polycystic ovaries

14. What do these scans diagnose?

These scans play a critical role in:

  • Diagnosing gynaecological conditions such as fibroids, cysts, or endometriosis.
  • Monitoring pregnancies, including early stages and detecting ectopic pregnancies.
  • Assessing causes of irregular periods, infertility, or pelvic pain.

Guiding further medical treatments or interventions

The fetal gender is not determined in the Pelvic / Transvaginal Scan / TVS or for that matter in any scan during pregnancy in strict adherence with the Government PCPNDT ACT.
